International Conference on Fisheries and Marine Research (ICoFMR)
The 5th International Conference on Fisheries and Marine Research (ICoFMR) 2024
14 - 15 November 2024
Poorly-managed large-scale mariculture can damage coastal and nearshore ecosystems, often used as nurseries by key capture fishery resources, and contribute to ecosystem contamination with food residues, waste, antibiotics, hormones, diseases and alien species. Environmental damage may come from the very nature of the fishing technology (e.g. in the use of dynamite or poison) or from the inappropriate use of an otherwise acceptable gear (e.g. using trawls in coral reefs or seagrass beds). This calls for the development and application of sustainable fisheries. This need requires sufficient support from technological innovation.
Responsible fisheries management is undermined by IUU fishing. Target 14.4 (effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing, IUU fishing and destructive fishing practices) and Target 14.6 (prohibit certain forms of fisheries subsidies which contribute to overcapacity and overfishing and eliminate subsidies that contribute to IUU fishing) of SDG 14 recognize the importance of eliminating IUU fishing to safeguard the sustainable use of fishery resources.
Therefore, it is necessary to formulate appropriate strategies and technologies to realize sustainable fisheries. The 5th International Conference on Fisheries and Marine Research (ICoFMR) 2024 carries the theme ‘Development strategy and technology innovation for sustainable fishery management.’
